If you are considering a Waitlist Me alternative for a small shop, start with how customers wait and how you call them back. Unwaited supports a live walk-in queue as well as advance signup lists. It can fit a shop that needs QR joining, private ticket status, and staff queue actions. It has no SMS, so a shop that depends on text alerts needs that capability elsewhere.

Shop size does not decide notification needs

A one-chair barber may need reliable ways to reach clients just as much as a restaurant does. Someone waiting outside, shopping nearby, or sitting in a car may not watch a status page or check email.

Before switching, write down the requirements that would stop your day if missing:

  • How guests join: a public link, a QR sign, staff entry, or a dedicated kiosk.
  • How guests get called: on-screen status, email, an audible call, or SMS.
  • What staff manage: a simple line, tables, service durations, reservations, or multiple locations.
  • What the limit means: active parties, individual seats, or total appointments in a day.

Check any provider's current documentation and trial against those requirements. This article describes Unwaited's workflow; it does not verify another vendor's current prices or feature set.

How a live queue works in Unwaited

Create a Queue page, publish it, and share the hosted link or a QR sign from Share. Public guests enter their name and email. Staff can also add walk-ins without email.

A fresh join gives the guest a short ticket code and a private status link. The code identifies their ticket; the private link lets them check status or leave. Keep that link, because repeating the form submission does not recover it.

Staff can call a ticket, start service, return a called ticket to waiting, or mark a called guest as a no-show. Calling can send an email when the ticket has an address. Initial confirmation emails require Starter or Pro. Neither action sends an SMS.

For a barber, starting service removes that client from the active queue count. For a restaurant, one ticket can represent a party, with party size available to staff. That does not assign a table or reserve seats.

A queue cap is different from a daily signup cap

A queue cap of twelve means at most twelve active parties, including those already called. Serving a party, recording a no-show, or having a guest leave makes room for another. It is not a promise to serve only twelve customers all day, and tickets do not need a nightly reset to make room.

An advance Standard signup list can instead cap entries for a registration window. Use it when you are collecting requests ahead of time, and say how those requests become confirmed plans. An existing Standard page does not become a live queue just because its title says “walk-ins.” Choose the Queue workflow for live operations.

For a specific date and time, review Bookings. For an order with product quantities, review Preorders. Those promises need more than a place in line.

Check the limits before you switch

Unwaited does not provide SMS paging, table assignment, payments, or external calendar sync. If you require a dedicated kiosk, detailed floor management, or wait-time estimates, include those requirements in your evaluation rather than assuming a QR page supplies them.

The pricing page explains account allowances and paid features. Signup allowances are shared across the account. When included usage is exhausted, queue admissions follow the usage and grace-period policy; Free does not mean unlimited queue admissions.

Try a complete service cycle before moving your regulars: join, keep the private link, call, start service, and handle a no-show. Include a staff-added guest without email. That shows whether the communication flow works for your shop.

FAQ

Questions

Can Unwaited run a live walk-in queue?

Yes. Guests can join by link or QR code, and staff can add walk-ins, call them, start service, or record a no-show. It is not limited to advance signup lists.

Does Unwaited text people when it is their turn?

No. Guests receive a private ticket link on screen. Calling a ticket can send an email when an address is present. Initial confirmation emails require Starter or Pro. There is no SMS.

What does the queue capacity count?

Active parties, including waiting and called tickets. A party of four uses one queue place. Starting service, leaving, or recording a no-show releases that place.

Can staff add someone without an email address?

Yes. Staff can add a walk-in without email. The public join form requires name and email. A ticket without email cannot receive an email call, so agree on how that guest will follow their turn.
